Smish Smash started as a pandemic pop-up in 2020 from married chefs Victor Donado and Amy Han, bouncing around Bay Area markets before landing a permanent home at Saluhall in San Francisco's SoMa neighborhood in January 2025. The concept is singular: a tightly focused smashburger menu built around Chef Donado's obsessive approach to the craft - thin smashed patties, deeply caramelized onions, and a proprietary Vic Mac sauce that ties it all together. What began as a scrappy pop-up is now the most nationally decorated smashburger in San Francisco.
The Cheeseboiga (double, $18) is the move - two thin-smashed beef patties with American cheese, deeply caramelized onions (cooked long and slow, not just griddled), crisp pickles, and the signature Vic Mac sauce on a soft potato roll. The caramelized onions set this apart from most smashburgers, adding a depth of sweetness that plays beautifully against the tangy house sauce. Food & Wine named it the #1 new burger spot in the entire country for 2026; The Infatuation gave the Cheeseboiga its highest SF smashburger praise.
Smish Smash now operates from a permanent stall inside Saluhall in SoMa. Earlier coverage may reference its pandemic pop-up era or now-closed Alameda location; this page reflects the active San Francisco location.
