Fort Collins' hidden smash burger - from the team behind Japango Sushi. Angus beef with housemade Peppajoy aioli on a tropical rooftop that's among the best in Northern Colorado.

Sugar Salt Sand opened in April 2024 in Old Town Fort Collins, the third concept from the team behind Japango Sushi. The restaurant is a deliberate escape - tropical décor, rooftop deck, and island-inspired cuisine that pulls from the poke, taco, and coastal traditions of warmer climates. The Smash Burger stands out as a signature detour from the island menu: Angus beef with Peppajoy aioli on a brioche bun, served to guests who maybe didn't expect to find a great burger above a sushi restaurant.
The Smash Burger at Sugar Salt Sand comes with a housemade Peppajoy aioli that you won't find anywhere else in Fort Collins - a sauce born from a kitchen that takes tropical flavors seriously. Angus beef, American cheese, and brioche bun are the foundation; the aioli and the element of surprise are what make it stick. At least one guest called it 'insanely delicious' in a place they came for poke - which, in its own way, is the best kind of review a secondary menu item can get.
Surprisingly the burger was insanely delicious.
One of the best patios in Northern Colorado - the atmosphere is tropical and the vibe is exactly what you'd hope for.
Welcoming beautiful space with spacious seating areas. I love looking down at the street.
The poke nachos were the best poke nachos we've ever had - a must order.
Very friendly, conversational and efficient service - the staff made the whole experience.
Good food - hot environment. The temperature of the restaurant itself was uncomfortably warm.
