The Story

Geneva's Wagyu Smash Contender
Where suburban craft meets the griddle.

The Burger Local opened in downtown Geneva around 2015, just a block from the Metra station - a neighborhood burger joint with an ambitious local-sourcing program (73-27 brisket wagyu from DeKalb, IL) and a menu built around creative, chef-driven builds. Chef Eric Olson's kitchen has been turning out elevated burgers for a decade, earning a loyal Fox Valley following and a Best Burger in Kane County designation. Nick Kindelsperger of the Chicago Tribune, writing for Naperville Magazine's regional burger survey, visited and admitted that even with his preference for thinner patties, The Burger Local 'was so juicy and meaty that I had to surrender to its power.'

The Wagyu Smash ($16) brings the smash technique to a 4oz wagyu patty - wide-smashed for a crispy-edged sear, stacked with American cheese, pickles, dill aioli, bacon, and egg on a pretzel bun. For double-patty devotees, The Classic Melt ($19) layers two smashed wagyu patties with Swiss and American cheese, caramelized onions, and special sauce on marbled rye - a classic diner melt reinterpreted with smash technique. Happy hour Mon-Thu (2-5pm) drops the smash burger to $10 with fries.

The Burger Local uses a 73-27 meat-to-fat ratio wagyu beef blend, processed locally in DeKalb, IL. The smash is applied to a 4oz patty smashed wide on the flat-top - the same technique applied to the Classic Melt double as well. Nick Kindelsperger of the Chicago Tribune (writing for Naperville Magazine) ranked The Burger Local #4 among all western suburbs burger destinations: 'The Burger Local's immense 10-ounce one is so juicy and meaty that I had to surrender to its power' - the 10oz is the non-smash Local Burger, but the same beef quality and sourcing feeds all menu items. The restaurant was named Best Burger in Kane County by Shaw Local's Best of the Fox 2025.
