BunSlut started in 2021 as a Houston food truck at the Galleria, founded by Ali Nasser and Mohammad Jamshad on a simple premise: halal smashburgers with a housemade sauce that punches above its weight. The concept caught on fast enough to earn a 7.9 from The Infatuation and a spot in Houstonia Magazine's best smashburger investigation. In December 2024, Brandon Gawthorp - founder of Urban Bird Hot Chicken - acquired the brand and has since expanded it to six-plus Houston-area locations, adding locally-sourced potato buns and new combo formats.
The Double is the signature - two smashed halal beef patties, American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and the housemade slut sauce on a potato bun. The sauce is the real differentiator: tangy, slightly spicy, and proprietary. The Infatuation singled out BunSlut's patties for achieving 'a balance between tender smoked beef and crispy edges that give the patty structure' - a harder thing to accomplish at the $9.99 price point than most smashburger spots manage.
Only BunSlut's smashburgers create a balance between tender smoked beef and crispy edges that give the patty structure.
The signature slut sauce had a nice tang to it - BunSlut was the underdog of the investigation.
Among the most convenient places to score a smash burger in Houston, and it's easy on the wallet.
Double and single-patty smashburgers loaded with melted cheese and caramelized onions, and frothy Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshakes.
The patties were overcooked for me and kind of bland - the least interesting component. The assortment of add-ons propped the overall experience up.
In Houston's ultra-competitive hamburger/smashburger scene, BunSlut left a fair amount to be desired.
