Patty Please launched in May 2024 as a burger pop-up inside Small Bar, an Avondale neighborhood bar operated by Footman Hospitality. Chef Khaled Simon - who also created Taco Sublime - built the concept around a tight smashburger menu, bringing serious technique into a casual late-night bar setting. The arrival of Patty Please became the defining element of Small Bar's revival: Chicago Magazine named it "Reboot of the Year" in February 2025, just eight months after opening night.
The Pleaser is the signature build - two beef patties smashed onto the griddle with onions pressed directly into the meat, then served on a Martin's potato bun. The onion smash technique caramelizes the onions into the crust of each patty, adding savory depth that most smashburger spots skip. At $8 for a single and $12 for a double, the value-to-quality ratio is exceptional: The Infatuation rated it 8.2/10 and Eater Chicago declared it "a perfectly executed burger."
They do everything you want out of a smash burger. It's a perfectly executed burger that you would not expect out of that location.
