A Wrigleyville institution since 1991, now serving 100% grass-fed smash burgers alongside organic craft beer brewed on-site. The sustainable sourcing is real.

Uncommon Ground has operated at 3800 N Clark in Wrigleyville since 1991, pioneering Chicago's farm-to-table movement more than three decades before it was a trend. The restaurant is home to Greenstar Brewing, the first certified-organic brewery in Illinois, and for years ran a certified-organic rooftop farm at its now-closed Edgewater location. The smash burger is a newer addition - a deliberate play for the neighborhood's sports crowd and a statement about what premium, organic sourcing can do in a simple format.
The Double Smash Burger uses 100% grass-fed, free-range beef patties smashed and seared for maximum crust, layered with white American cheese, Mighty Vine tomatoes, heirloom baby lettuce, shaved red onion, pickle chips, and house-made special sauce on a butter brioche bun. The sourcing standards that define Uncommon Ground's broader menu - organic, local, traceable - apply here too. This is a smashburger built from genuinely premium inputs in a city that has no shortage of strong contenders.
The Smash Burger was worth every penny at $19.99 - the grass-fed beef quality really came through.
The gluten-free bun was good, not rock hard or falling apart on the burger.
Everything is locally sourced and handled with tender loving care.
The smash burger was a disappointment - the meat was not very flavorful and on the tough side.
Farm to table food is very good, staff are excellent and there's a vibrant and cozy vibe.
The burger was decent; one reviewer wouldn't order again and noted many places with a much better burger.
