The Story

Austin's Latke-Topped Smashburger

JewBoy Burgers opened in 2016 when Mo Pittle set out to create a burger joint that reflected where he came from: El Paso border food culture, Jewish heritage, and a deep respect for simple, quality ingredients. Operating out of a converted former gas station on Airport Blvd in Austin's North Loop, the restaurant has become one of the neighborhood's most beloved fixtures, winning Austin Chronicle's Best Burger Readers Poll in back-to-back years.

The Yenta is JewBoy's smashburger entry: a 6oz 80/20 hand-ground patty from Longhorn Meat Market, smashed thin on the griddle, then topped with a hot crispy potato latke. The green chile and cheddar latke version is the essential order, giving the burger a savory, crackling potato layer that makes it unlike any other Austin smashburger.

The green chile cheeseburger here is of New Mexico quality - and in a state not exactly known for its green chile game, that's high praise.

Strengths & Caveats

✓ Strengths
Two-time Austin Chronicle Best of Austin Best Burger winner in 2022 and 2023.
The Yenta's potato latke topping is a genuinely unique smashburger build.
Fresh 80/20 beef sourced from Longhorn Meat Market gives the patty stronger ingredient credibility than most fast-casual competitors.
Very strong crowd signal: 1,712 Yelp reviews at 4.6/5 and 720 Google reviews at 4.7/5.
North Loop patio location feels like a neighborhood gathering spot rather than a transient food hall stall.
⚠ Caveats
Closed Mondays, which limits access for visitors planning around a short Austin trip.
The featured smash build uses a 6oz patty as its base, so the smash element is present but shares the spotlight with the latke concept.
The standalone Infatuation review is from 2022 and is now outside the freshest review window.
Single location only, so the concept has not been tested across multiple stores.
