The Win-Dow started as a walk-up window at American Beauty, a Venice steakhouse, when restaurateurs Paul Hibler and Jeff Goodman — the team behind The Tasting Kitchen and Superba Food + Bread — decided to do one thing with obsessive focus: a hand-smashed burger for under five dollars. Opened in April 2019, the Venice original sparked enough demand that Win-Dow now has six locations across Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Barbara, with Santa Monica on the way.
The formula is stripped to essentials: hand-smashed beef patty with griddled onions, American cheese, pickles, and house sauce on a Martin's potato roll for $4.35 (single) or $7.50 (double). The restraint is the point — no gimmicks, just execution. Time Out awarded the Silver Lake location a rare 5/5 stars and called it 'one of the best, most affordable smashburgers in town.' The public agreed: Win-Dow won the 2025 LAist Tournament of Cheeseburgers popular vote.
